    Looking for feedback

Ok - our ArcGIS Server Team blog site has been live for a while now and I really want to hear what folks have to say about it.  I want your comments.  Is it useful?  Does the blog meet your expectations?  Is it technical enough or do you want less details?

Use this thread as your place to provide me the information we need to keep the site real!

Recruiter looking for GIS people.  Anybody point me to a good place to talk to someone?

    James Schekwrote:
I agree with a number of points already made... Need to have an "advanced" and a "basic" tag of some sort. There needs to be more architecture discussion. There's virtually no Java related postings... I still enjoy reading it and getting a better insight into how AGS works.

The four major areas that I think the blog could touch on that would be of value to me (and other developers at my organization):

    1. Some architecture of how we should be designing ArcGIS Server Systems. How did you envision the systems being deployed? Where does security fit into the whole system? How should the GIS interact with other systems? How do I make an instance? When should I make a new instance?

    2. Java SDK tips and tricks... Particuarlly, the notorious AutomationException. But beyond that, some better guidelines and tips on how to use the Java SDK. We're fortunate to have 9.2 and more first-class Java Objects. Unfortunately, many of them are still those "Proxy" objects that are none-to-obvious to figure out their type information. How do we figure that out? What ways are there a way to do it programmatically? If the Javadocs are deficient, then is our only strategy to look at the WinSDK docs? Where are the differences in the JDK vs the WinSDK? Is there a system or pattern to these differences? How about some best-practices?

The Java SDK requires special attention because it's not a true Java SDK and doesn't behave exactly the same as other Java SDK's. While I've become quite adept at translating .NET and VB code to Java, it still makes us Java developers feel a little alienated. The 9.2 Java SDK is a huge step in the right direction, but is still not very fun to work with.

    3. Limitations and known-limits of ArcGIS Server. I recently found out there's an unintended limit to the file-size you can upload to ArcGIS Server... It also turns out there's some kind of "cap" on the number of minutes a geoprocessing task can run on server. I'm sure there's all kinds of "known" limits to the system like this. Knowing some of these would be helpful, particuarlly for those of us who are trying to build something other than a tradition web-map application.

    4. Security, in general, needs to be better discussed. What mechanisms do I have to protect content? Protect users from each other? Protect content from users? Heck, the support.esri.com has *nothing* on password protecting ArcGIS Server. Luckily, I know enough about JAAS, Tomcat Authentication, and Apache Authentication that I've got a few options at my disposal. What was ESRI's vision of security? Did you think about it? High-level, enterprise architecture level docs aren't very helpful to those of us on the ground putting systems into production. Particuarlly when we don't have established J2EE architectures.

Another example: during the 9.2 Beta, I noticed my windows account password was being stored in a reversable encrypted format (and reversing it was trivial)... I reported this bug, and simply got a "we'll look into it" response. I'd like to see a greater discussion of your security philosophies... Why are some of these files containing passwords? How should we be protecting these kinds of sensative files? What do you do in response to a security concern? How does ArcGIS merge with various security implementations?

    Hi Art,

I'm glad to see this kind of information being posted, but would appreciate more Java coverage - the .NET specific stuff is of no interest to me.

As an aside,  the Windows Live Spaces blogging environment does not seem to work correctly w/ FireFox (seems to be unable to add comments except in IE)

    Thanks!

    Hi Art -

Thanks for blogging for AGS.  Since AGS now includes ArcSDE technology, it would be nice to see ArcSDE discussion.  Also would be useful for ESRI to expose ArcSDE "state trees" to arcobjects.

    Happy Holidays,

What I keep hoping to see on this blog or on the edn site is a tutorial on how to use the server product to do something like a spatial join/query and return the results to a record set. Can I do this using a data access layer? Can I use the ADF? Query the services directly? The webdevelopment stuff I can muddy through(there are plenty of resouces out there) it's more of the arcobjects side that I am having trouble with. I see lots of code snippets out there for java or vb6. It would help me to see a from the beginning to end tutorial of how I can access and manipulate this stuff. maybe something like Scoot Guthrie's video on getthing started with asp.net ajax. That thing was great at pointing me in the right direction.

All that being said, I love what you have done so far. Keep it coming.

Art - I have been quite impressed with the blog so far. Brief posts for sure, but focused and succinct. By far my favorite blog I read is Scott Guthrie's from the ASP.NET team at Microsoft http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/default.aspx. The mix of pointers to other resources and task-oriented how-tos is exactly what I look for in a strong technical RSS feed. IMHO the closer you can mimic this type of content, the more people you'll have subscribing: a mix of ADF recipes, best practices, and big picture architecture.

As for frequency, it'd be nice to see something every couple of days / twice a week just to keep us short-attention-span types interested :-)

    Art,

I think the Server blog is off to a great start, but Rachel has many good points - particularly re: the skillsets of the ESRI developer community who is currently being tasked to use this product. I'd suggest having some posts on "intro" ASP.NET type topics, or a really good link list (with comments on the content) to other online resources that will help the ESRI traditional users adopt/adapt to ASP.NET/Ajax/Atlas etc.

One option would be to have two types of posts & RSS Feeds - "basics" and "advanced" - Basic covers intro to ASP.NET up to simple enhancements to the templated sites. The Advanced posts are aimed at people who are building sites from the ground up, and have a solid background in ASP.NET/Ajax/Javascript, and go into more complex scenarios.

Here are a few things I'd like to see...
    - Some examples integrating the ADF (map contol + toolbar) with Prototype et al. and/or the ASP.NET AJAX controls. While the ESRI controls are nice, the Prototype community is huge. While the ADF is not built on the MS Ajax stack, this is going to be the defacto ASP.NET Ajax toolkit, so examples would be very good.

    - Mixing the ASP.NET Membership system into the ADF. An example that shows how to create a site where the user's login (not a Windows login - just a site login) controls access to tools & datalayers.

    - Building a queued geoprocessing web service which delays GP processing until off-peak times, and then sends a notice to the user that the processing has been completed, with an option to return to the map to view it, or direct link to download the data.

    Cheers,

    Dave

Great Job... Don't get bogged down writing blogs "Introducing us to .Net for ESRI" as that's what the MVP's are for :)... I would ask for more input from end users about ways to improve the .ADF for future releases... Again, great resource!

    The Code snipits are usefull.
Given that 9.2 server ADF has just been released, there are probably not going to be a slew of comments, unless it is from someone involved in beta.
Personally I find the postings thin, and marginally usefull, especially for those starting developing with the ADF.
For comparison take a look at:
There is a good reason why most ASP.NET developers have Scott Mitchell and other members of 4 guys permanently etched into their RSS feeds, because these tutorials are meaty, usefull, take a real scenario and walk you from start to finish with sample code attached.  Of course this involves alot more work, but that is what makes a usefull site.
In my opinion it's more critical for the ADF.  If I don't want to follow Scott Mitchell's tutorials, I can go on Amazon and take my pick of a gazillion books chuck full of ASP.NET tutorials and sample code, everything from Ajax to Web Parts, etc.  There is no book for ADF, there's some samples -- and walkthroughs --heck, I can count those on my left hand.
Generally a good rule if a book or website is going to be useful can be gauged by skimming the contents.
If it contians things that start with "how to..." example "How to use master pages", "how create a server control with embedded resources", then it's usefull, because these are things developers need to do.
"using the callback control framework" is esoteric.
Outside of a handfull of GIS developers who are really, really up on their ASP.NET 2.0 info, most people are not going to know what the heck a "callback" in .NET 2.0 is.  The section in the developer help "Page Postbacks and Client Callbacks" does not do a heck of alot either as it is not in the context of a real world ADF application (I might as well read the orginal articles from adaptive path and MSDN).
How about "how to add a graphics layer to the map" and including a full tutorial, screen shots, and attached code and project file?
Or "How to add results to the Task Results" including all of the above.
    Going from start to finish.
    That would be really usefull.
Sorry to sound harsh, but given that a majority of your audience is not going to be from a classical ASP.NET developer background who have kept on top of all the new .NET 2.0 technologies (including the AJAX framework), unless good real world cases and start to finish tutorials are presented, there is going to be a world of pain when the average GIS dev attempts to modify the ADF via VS.NET.
(why is my page not posting?  I added the resource and refreshed the TOC and Tasks, why are they not showing up?  Why can't i get the value out of a dropdown box I added to the page?  What's AJAX?, etc... just a sampling of the emails I'm getting from co-workers)

    Hi!

I am a big fan of the blog as it is now and I hope you will continue to go that way!

I am working with AGS 9.2 and there are lots of sample applications I expected that are not there (anymore).
So that's why I am looking forward to see you blog about these subjects ...

I would appreciate if there were also Java examples.

But netherless it's a very interesting showcase with sources.
